The Big Day of Giving is quickly approaching! The support raised between now and Thursday, May 6 will be a crucial lifeline for local nonprofits like the Crocker Art Museum.
The last year has been difficult for all of us, including the Crocker. We had to make tough decisions to ensure the sustainability of our programs and operations, including severe budget cuts and staff layoffs. However, we also reimagined how we can serve Sacramento's many diverse communities during this time of great need.
We remained committed to keeping the arts approachable, even during our mandated closure. We moved exhibitions and programs into more accessible virtual spaces, delivering meaningful art experiences to thousands of children, families, and seniors. Exhibition tours with Museum curators were filmed and shared for free with thousands of visitors. We even hosted a virtual concert and a virtual film series!
We challenged ourselves to meet the needs of the community. Programs like the virtual Teacher Workshops made art education resources available to educators and students for at-home learning. Free programs like ArtRx and Artful Meditation were redesigned to promote health and healing from the comfort of your own home. And most importantly, we created hands-on art experiences like the Color Us Hopeful coloring books, which celebrate the diversity of local artists and were delivered to underserved children and seniors in partnership with local food banks.
Acclaimed sociopolitical artist Al Farrow discusses his career, his process, and his elaborate 2018 architectural work: The White House. Created from gun parts and ammunition, the sculpture proved especially relevant when this program originally streamed on January 21, 2021.
These new and innovative ways of serving our Sacramento community were only possible through the generosity of our members. As we reopen our doors and welcome our community back into our galleries, we will need your help to ensure these programs and experiences continue. After nearly a year of closure, the Crocker will need the support of our entire community to ensure we can continue to connect people in unexpected ways with art, ideas, each other, and the world around them through innovative digital programs and transformative in-person art experiences.
