The Board of Directors of the Crocker Art Museum Association (the "Board" and the "Crocker", respectively) requests proposals from executive search firms to lead a search for highly qualified candidates for the position of Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer (the "CEO" or "Position").
The selected firm will work closely with the Board, its appointed Search Committee, selected members of staff, and community representatives to identify potential candidates, conduct interviews, and make recommendations to the Search Committee for presentation to the Board, which will make the final decision regarding recommended candidates.
The Crocker intends to select a qualified search firm by April 1, 2024.

TITLE: Manager of Museum Sales & Retail Operations
DEPARTMENT: Institutional Advancement

EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Full-time/Non-Exempt
HIRING RANGE: $79,040 - $81,640. Salary will be commensurate with experience and other qualifications. Benefits package includes health, dental, life insurance, 403B, and vacation package.
PRIMARY OBJECTIVE:
The
Crocker Art Museum is dedicated to promoting an awareness of and enthusiasm for
human experience through art. We measure our success by our ability to enrich
the intellectual and cultural life of the communities we serve. This position
helps fulfill this by maximizing retail profitability, while providing a
positive visitor experience for all. This position will manage the day-to-day
functions of the Facility Rentals program, provide retail guidance to the
Museum Store and Visitor Services Managers, and serve as the primary contact
and staff liaison with the contract food service provider.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Specific duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
Department Management
- Create annual business plans for each retail program area (Facility Rentals, Museum Store, and Visitor Services) including budgets, pricing structures, marketing strategies, customer service standards and practices, staffing levels, and other strategies to maximize earned income.
- Oversee the day-to-day management of the Facilities Rentals team and work with the Museum Store and Visitor Services Managers on the day-to-day management of the Store and Admissions.
- Develop and ensure adherence to policies and procedures related to each retail operation.
- Explore and develop new earned income opportunities.
Facility Rentals
- Supervise the Facility
Rentals team, including Event Coordinators.
- Research, develop, and
maintain facility rental policies, procedures, and fee structures that are
competitive within the market and maximize revenue for the Museum’s
operations.
- Develop and implement
sales strategies to secure new facility rentals.
- Provide professional,
courteous, and timely communications to develop and maintain positive
relationships with existing and potential clients.
- Negotiate, review, and
execute all client and vendor contracts and agreements. Ensure all Museum
policies and procedures are adhered to by both clients and vendors.
- Provide oversight for
each facility rental and act as a primary point of contact on behalf of
the Museum with clients and vendors, pre- to post-event.
- Prepare event timelines,
including details on all vendors, equipment delivery and pick up
schedules, and emergency contact information.
- Provide direction to
caterers, other vendors, and event staff from set up to break down.
- Coordinate with Museum
security, café, and operations staff to ensure facilities and equipment
are well-maintained and ready for use.
- Ensure the Museum’s
Master Calendar is up to date with current event schedules and ensure
there are no conflicting events or dates.
- Serve as a resource for
other Crocker staff on catering, rentals, and other event logistics and
help support Museum events.
- Recruit, train, and
manage Facility Rental staff and volunteers.
- Prepare and maintain
necessary event documentation and reports.
- Responsible for the Museum’s alcohol inventory
Museum Store
- Supervise the Museum Store Manager and work with the Museum Store and its staff to maximize revenue generation through on-site sales and other retail opportunities.
- Set qualitative and quantitative performance goals for staff to meet overall strategic retail goals.
- Work with the Museum Store Manager to develop a staffing plan and ensure that staffing is within budget and adequate to meet customer needs.
- Ensure the Store’s merchandise mix includes appropriate products at a variety of price points that reflect the Museum’s programs, experiences, and collections.
- Collaborate on the development of custom products that reflect the Museum’s brand identity to further the visitor experience and contribute to elevating the Museum’s visibility.
Admission
- Supervise the Visitor Services Manager and work with the Admissions Desk and its staff to ensure that Museum entry process and procedure is conducive to repeat visitation, membership conversion, and positive word of mouth for the Museum.
- Improve and implement customer service standards for front-facing staff.
- Develop a cross-training process and procedure for Museum Store and Admissions staff.
- Oversees all aspects of end-of-day attendance counts, revenue reconciliation, and daily reports.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum
of five years of progressively responsible experience with facilities
rentals and/or merchandising in a retail environment.
- Knowledge
and experience developing business plans.
- Experience
managing staff including hiring, training, performance management, and
coaching.
- Excellent written and oral communication
skills.
- Ability
to communicate clearly and effectively with donors, members, volunteers,
vendors, etc.
- Intellectual curiosity and problem-solving
ability.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in
teams and across departments.
- Proven
ability to handle confidential information with discretion and diplomacy.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Excellent organizational and project management
skills that reflect ability to prioritize and coordinate multiple
simultaneous projects.
- Ability to understand and employ financial
skills, e.g., budgeting, cost analysis, forecasting, etc.
- Punctual and adheres to scheduled hours.
- Must be available evenings and weekends.
- Current CA Driver’s License and proof of auto insurance.
- Ability to monitor own work to ensure quality and accuracy.

Rental expense and revenue budgets and works closely with Managers of
Museum Store and Visitor Services to develop their budgets.

- Utilize Crocker Resources wisely.

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE:
The
Preparator engages audiences by creating dynamic and educational exhibition installations.
Working
as part of a team of art preparators/installers, this position is primarily
responsible for facilitating the installation of exhibitions in the Museum per
the Museum exhibition program.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Specific duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Collaborate in a team environment to produce superior quality exhibitions
- Installing and deinstalling exhibitions and installations according to the plans of the Exhibition Designer, Registrar, or designated Curatorial staff
- Preparing and packing/unpacking objects for travel and assisting with incoming and outgoing shipments
- Ability to safely use hand and power tools and other necessary equipment.
- Paint galleries and exhibition furniture
- Prepare signs and labels
- Fabricate hanging and mounting systems for works of art
- Ability to perform physical work associated with preparation of exhibits.
- Perform maintenance duties to keep exhibits and displays clean and clearly labeled
- Prepare artwork and historical artifacts for shipping; receive and unpack shipments of art objects and other exhibition related materials
- Transport art in 26’ moving trucks; knowledge of proper strapping techniques required
- Completing finish work for exhibitions or installations including lighting, leveling, cleaning, labeling, and signage
- Ability to multi-task and assume a variety of projects simultaneously.
- Perform related duties as required.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
- Successful completion of a four-year degree from an accredited college or university in art, commercial art, museum studies, art museum education, or a closely related field.
- Ability to work with new/digital media, such as A/V setup and projection, digital editing, DVD authoring.
- Ability to solve problems and find attractive and safe solutions to hanging and/or showcasing unusual works of art.
- Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with staff members, volunteers, and subcontractors.
- Ability to work under pressure and adhere to aggressive changeover schedule.
- Valid California driver’s license.
Preferred Skills and Knowledge
- Rigging techniques for large and small objects.
- Three years of professional art installation experience working in an art museum, gallery, related institution, or art studio.
- Familiarity with lighting art.
- Complicated fabrication of wood, metal, or plastic.
- Familiarity with welding techniques; MIG and Oxy.
- An understanding of the goals and strategies of art museum education.
- Strong design skills and knowledge of a range of aesthetic styles to assure historical appropriateness and compatibility between the exhibition design and the art presented.
- Matting and framing skills.
FISCAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Ensure that projects and supplies are within the annual fiscal budget.
