This summer, young adults are invited to take a deep dive into art, inspired by what's on view at the Crocker. From comics to cross stitching, explore a variety of media while learning from local artists and Museum staff. There are seven sessions offered every Thursday from June 23 through August 4. Each session has a unique theme, so sign up for one, two, or all sessions!

Session 1
Sweet Treats (Not for Eating)
Thursday, June 23 | 6 – 8 PM
Inspired by Wayne Thiebaud’s Pies, Pies, Pies, get your hands dirty crafting three-dimensional sweet treats using papier-mâché (pronounced “paper ma-shay”), a composite material consisting of paper pieces or pulp, sometimes reinforced with textiles, bound with an adhesive, such as glue, starch, or wallpaper paste.
Session 2
Not Your Crayola Watercolors
Thursday, June 30 | 2:30 – 4:30 PM
Join Sacramento artist and community advocate Taylor Pannell for a casual exploration of watercolors, a distinct medium that straddles the line between painting and drawing. Chat with Pannell about her experience as a professional artist and owner of Taylor’d Mind Studios, an art studio that gives back to the community.
Session 3
Comics Across Cultures: Manga, Fumetti, & Bande dessinée
Thursday, July 7 | 2:30 – 4:30 PM
Explore sequential art storytelling (AKA comics and graphic novels) from around the world with local comic book artist and author Eben Burgoon. From the United States to Japan to Italy to France, consider how different cultures combine text and image in a sequence of panels to tell rich stories and share complex ideas.
Session 4
Steampunked
Thursday, July 14, 6 – 8 PM
Reimagine people and places through the lens of steampunk, a sub-genre inspired by Victorian-era industrialism. Consider the iconography of a steam-powered future with throwbacks to the 19th century, and use goggles, gears, and glass to compose an abstract steampunk portrait.
Session 5
From Trash to Treasure
Thursday, July 21, 2:30 – 4:30 PM
Inspired by the work of Coachella Valley artist Carlos Ramirez, create your own visual language by reassembling found objects onto a canvas. Transform ordinary items into something alluring and magical with this multi-media endeavor.
Session 6
Out of This World
July 28, 6 – 8 PM
Go galactic with Sacramento artist Jared Konopitski. Design your own planet using wood canvas and spray paint, then create a mode of transportation to get there. Learn how Konopitski paints his daydreams that have been exhibited across the United States and internationally.
Session 7
Don’t Cross Stitch Me
August 4, 2:30 – 4:30 PM
Capture your creative wit in the popular art of cross stitching, a form of counted thread embroidery that has been around for ages. From snarky sayings to affirmations of power, design your idea on paper before using a hoop, needle, and thread to immortalize your message.
