Wayne Thiebaud 100: Paintings, Prints, and Drawings opens October 16. Best known for his tantalizing paintings of cakes and pies, Thiebaud has long been affiliated with Pop art — although his body of work is far more expansive. The exhibition represents the artist’s achievements in all media, with pieces drawn from the Crocker’s collection, as well as works from the Thiebaud family and Foundation, many of which have never been shown publicly.
To celebrate, we're offering a variety of public programs and resources in conjunction with the exhibition, all of which can be enjoyed from the comfort of your living room. To learn how to see the exhibition in person, click HERE.
Online Exhibition & Self-Guided 3D Tour
Unable to visit the Crocker in-person? To increase public access to this important retrospective, all 100 objects from the exhibition have been published in an online gallery for the duration of the exhibition, just like our Student & Community exhibitions. You can also view the artworks as they are displayed from the comfort of your armchair, via self-guided 3D tour. Both will be available HERE by November 1.
Curator Talk With Scott A. Shields, Ph.D
Hear directly from Crocker Art Museum Associate Director and Wayne Thiebaud 100 curator Scott A. Shields, Ph.D., in a long-form recorded tour of the exhibition and its highlights. The video will be available on the exhibition page and most major social media platforms by November 1.

Tired of staring at your television screen? Bored of game night and family Zoom calls? Try @Home Studio, a subscription box filled with multi-layered art adventures for adults and children alike, inspired by works from the Crocker's collections and local artists. (October's box was inspired by Wayne Thiebaud!) Each box contains everything needed to complete three projects, including concise, written instructions and links to additional resources.
Subscribers can also join an optional "check-in" each Tuesday at 7 PM or Saturday at 1 PM to receive, tips, tricks, and meet other creatives. Designed for ages 6+ but enjoyable for all ages.

Paint an Abstracted Cityscape
Human manipulation is a key theme in Wayne Thiebaud’s work, including his dizzying and divergent landscapes. Analyze his unsettling approach to perspective before experimenting with bold composition techniques to create a cityscape in acrylic.

Thiebaud 101: Figurative Drawing
It’s not all pies, pies, pies! In this virtual studio class, explore some of the artist’s lesser known works, then learn contour and gesture drawing using pencil and charcoal before creating your own work on paper. Please note, participants must supply the following materials: a kneaded eraser, vine charcoal, and HB, 3B, 6B pencils. Registration closes November 7 at 11 AM.

LIVE Teacher Workshop: Wayne Thiebaud 100
Explore the work of the artist through the lens of an educator. This workshop will introduce teachers to Thiebaud’s life and work and use the elements of art and principals of design to demonstrate strategies for using his work in the classroom. Lesson plans and strategies are provided and demonstrated.

Homeschool Art Connection: Cakes & Pies
Discover new artists and works of art on the second Tuesday of every month in a series for homeschoolers and distance learners. The program features virtual gallery tours and enriching, hands-on activities with trained docents and educators. Thiebaud 101: Color and Composition
In this virtual studio class, delve into Thiebuad’s complex use of composition and learn how he uses exaggerated colors to depict a variety of subject matter. Then, use acrylic paint to create your own vibrant, colorful paintings. Supplies may be purchased through the Museum or on your own. Registration closes November 9 at 11 AM.

Panel Discussion: Three Takes on Thiebaud
Moderated by Crocker Art Museum Associate Director &Chief Curator Scott A. Shields, Ph.D., this informative discussion between three people intimately connected to Wayne Thiebaud will center around insights and unique experiences. Join the artist’s daughter, model, and writer Twinka Thiebaud; painter and professor Hearne Pardee; and critic and art historian Julia Friedman, Ph.D., for a singular program on Thiebaud and his life.
