The unique towns, landscape, and shoreline of the Netherlands have inspired artists for centuries. In this exhibition, Dutch artists explore urban canals, pastureland, and stormy seas in 50 paintings created over the course of the 19th century. A restrained Romanticism, inspired by the techniques and subjects of the Dutch Golden Age, gave way in the 1860s to a direct, tonal style that was nature-based and favored by the Hague School. Jacob Maris, Hendrik Mesdag, and Jozef Israels, all admired by Vincent Van Gogh, are just a few of the artists represented in the exhibition, which celebrates a gift to the Museum from the Beekhuis Family Foundation.
