Untitled (Surrealist Painting) | Crocker Art Museum
Untitled (Surrealist Painting), 1945.
Claire Falkenstein (American, 1908–1997)
Oil on canvas, 46 x 36 in. Crocker Art Museum, gift of The Falkenstein Foundation, 2009.34.3.

Claire Falkenstein began her career at the center of San Francisco’s art scene. She was a painter and sculptor engaged with Pacific Coast Surrealism and a respected instructor at the California School of Fine Arts from 1947–49. Falkenstein's paintings began as landscapes with figures and moved to abstractions with surrealist overtones. Some works included sculptural elements, while this painting combines linear and biomorphic forms, anticipating her later sculptural concerns. She moved to Paris in 1950 and continued sculpting there on a smaller scale by making wire jewelry, which led to her later sculpture.
