Born in Los Angeles, artist Bob Hauzous attended art school in Oakland and is of Chiracahua Apache ancestry. This sculpture depicts an American Indian figure bound with rope — only his hands and head emerge from his blanket wrapping. It recalls famous Chiricahua Apache warriors, including Cochise (1812–1874) and Geronimo (1829–1909), who both endured and survived imprisonment. The figure’s oversized hands suggest that, even though tied up, he is still powerful.
